While media and the supplements industry may suggest otherwise, there is no magic shortcut to losing weight. Maintaining a healthy weight in proportion to your body height is a simple balance of eating healthy and exercising in moderation to burn any excess calories. Guidelines are very clear about the amount and types of calories adult men (1500-2000 kcal/day) and women (1200-1500 kcal/day) need to consume in order to maintain their weight at the recommended BMI.
I am writing this article to enforce the natural ways to lose weight. In today’s world of telemarketing and advertising, it is very easy to fall into the trap of the Billion Dollar food-supplements industry. They supposedly have the cure for everything, from acne and hair loss, to 1 million different pills to lose weight. However, none of these have ever been proven to be effective in the long term. Natural remedies, on the other hand, have been effective in helping us lose body fat and excess calories in a healthy and body friendly way. They also have zero side effects when consumed in moderation.
Below are listed the easiest and most effective remedies to help you lose weight at home without spending hundreds of dollars. Take a look into your pantries and you might find everything you need right in your cupboards.
- you will need: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon/one stick fresh cinnamon
- 8 ounces water
Directions: Place the water in a small saucepan, bring it to a boil and hold at a simmer. Add your cinnamon powder/cinnamon stick, and let the tea brew for 5-7 minutes. Take it off the stove and drink away! To add flavor, you can add a few drops of lemon juice and a tsp of honey.
Benefits: More and more studies are showing that cinnamon can help manage blood sugar levels, keeping them at an optimum level. This helps curb appetite and discourages large amounts of food intake. It also helps slowly melt away body fat, keeping your waistline in check.
- you will need: 1/2 inch ginger root or 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp green tea 8 ounces water
Directions: place ginger and green tea in a strainer/sieve, and steep in the water for 5-7 minutes. Steeping green tea for too long and leave a bitter taste, so strain and drink away right away. For flavor, stir in a little honey and/ or add lemon juice. Drinking on an empty stomach leads to more health benefits than drinking on a full stomach.
Benefits: Green tea has long been touted as a weight loss aid due to catechins, theanine and caffeine in the tea. These components are antioxidants and provide an overall boost to your metabolism . Theanine is an amino acid that can encourage the release of dopamine, a chemical in the body released by the brain which plays an active role in making you happy and relaxed.
DANDELION AND PEPPERMINT TEA
- You will need: 1 tsp dried dandelion leaves 1 tsp dried peppermint leaves 8 ounces water
Directions: pour a cup of boiling water over the dandelion and peppermint and steep, covered, for 10 minutes. Strain, and add lemon to taste.
Benefits: Dandelion and peppermint tea is a fabulous drink that will keep your liver healthy. Dandelion has liver-protective constituents, and both dandelion and peppermint automatically stimulate the production of bile in the liver, helping with digestion and absorption of nutrients, especially fats.
- You will need: a handful of fresh sage, or 2 tsps of dried sage 8 ounces water
Directions: Pour boiling water over sage and steep for 4-5 minutes. Add lemon to taste if you find it bitter. It has the most effects when had twice a day.
Benefits: Sage is an excellent herb to combat stress in our lives. It has a calming effect on the entire body. It is also used for digestive problems, including loss of appetite, gas (flatulence), stomach pain (gastritis), diarrhea, bloating, and heartburn. It is also used for reducing overproduction of perspiration and saliva; and for depression, memory loss, and Alzheimer’s disease.
Staying hydrated is an essential aspect of weight loss. Hydration is very important for your body to run smoothly and to burn fat. Water flushes harmful chemicals from the body via your kidneys. It also helps maintain the elasticity of skin. Reduced water intake can be perceived mistakenly by the body as hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking and inadvertent weight gain. So drink your 8 glasses of water a day, and stay on top of your health and fitness!
